Sacha Miller - Apprentice Web Developer at Forrit

What have you been up to in the last couple of months?

In the last couple of months we have worked on migrating a client onto the new and improved version of Forrit's content management system (CMS). As part of this process, I helped to move content and rebuild some of the back-end components such as the Adobe Targeting script. The project provided an opportunity to work alongside an experienced developer to learn a new skill.

I have also been working on improving my technical skills in CSS and HTML. Improving these has helped me resolve website accessibility issues much more quickly and effectively.

What have been your highlights from the past few months?

The main highlight for me, was successfully completing my second year of university, where I am studying for a Degree in Software Developer as part of my apprenticeship.

Seeing the progression I have made as a developer and noticing how I am becoming more confident with complex issues also makes me proud.

I have also loved the increased face-to-face interaction with my team in the office, which was brought about by the implementation of our new hybrid working policy.

Have you learned any new skills?

Over the past few months, I have continued to develop my digital skills in CSS and HTML. I have also started to make progress with learning Typescript and JAVA. I have been consolidating what I know and improving day by day.

Some of the softer skills I have been improving in are communications and collaboration, which have both been made much eas9ier now that we have returned to 'team days' in the office.

How are you finding balancing university and work?

Balancing University and work hasn't been easy - however I would still definitely recommend an apprenticeship. Now that I have finished second year, I only need to attend university once a month instead of once a week which is a relief. Third-year is where the grades start to count towards my degree though, so I'm sure there will be lots of hard work in store for me!
