Case Study

Not every small or mid-size tech business knows what to do with an apprentice. They don’t always have a plan, they aren’t sure how to get a return on their investment, and they are even worried about a disappointing learner. AND Digital is a mid-sized business that has a framework and business model which creates value for apprentices and for the company. An educational framework that builds on skills combined with a shared employee workspace allows apprentices the opportunity to meaningfully contribute to projects that bring value to AND. Collaboration with a variety of mentors happens organically, and employees benefit from the insight gained from teaching and sharing knowledge.

Software Development Graduate Apprentices are guided through an internal course for six months that allows them to explore the full product lifecycle journey. It is split into two disciplines, product analyst and product developer, and the syllabus alternates week to week between subjects.

AND hosts a lab space where all employees can contribute to internal projects and pro-bono work while they are in-between other projects. The apprentices work within this lab setting, progressing projects and learning from a variety of talented team members that drop into projects.

Mike Kinsella, AND Digital Product and Delivery Specialist who helped design and deliver the new internal syllabus said:

"The great thing about our lab is that it is a two-way street. Not only are our apprentices taking on new skills and practical experiences, but our internal team are also sharpening their teaching and coding skills while they all actively produce important work for the company. As a take away, don’t underestimate the value the apprentices can add to the team. Six to eight weeks in they can make a tangible difference on a project with the right engagement.”
