Case Study

There are many different ways you can get into Tech and Diane Jonker's journey to the Social Security Scotland Cloud and Engineering Team was somewhat unconventional.

After graduating from university, Diane worked a number of roles ranging from customer service for LEGO to an key account manager for a print company. But in 2019 she quit customer service and enrolled in the CodeClan Software Development boot camp course, which ran from July 2019 till November 2019. After she was re-skilled as a software developer, Diane was able to join the Scottish Government in January 2020 and she hasn't looked back since.

Why did you look for a job working with the Scottish Government?

When I finished my course, I focused on finding a company where there would be opportunity to progress and develop.  I also wanted a career that offered stability. I was very happy to secure a Junior Developer position with Social Security Scotland, helping to build and maintain a benefits delivery system for the people of Scotland. Everything I was looking for in a job, I found working with the Scottish Government.

What's it like work with the wider Digital Data and Technology Team?

One of the best things about working for the government has been the support I've been given. Not just from other developers, but from the wider Digital Data and Technology profession colleagues e.g. Business Analysts, Data Analysts, everyone offered support and we worked as one team. This collaborative way of working helped me acquire lots of knowledge very quickly and enabled me to become more self-sufficient.

Diane was only on the job for 2 months when the global pandemic forced us all into lockdown. But the professional support she received actually increased. Later that year, Diane was encouraged by her line manager to apply to a senior role. She was successful in her interview and was promoted to Senior Developer in January 2021.
