Studying for a HNC/HND or degree in an art related subject such as Graphic Design or Fine Art are good ways to become an Art Director. Studying Marketing is also a useful subject.

An apprenticeship Creative and Digital Media, Digital Marketing or Design can also help to improve your artistic skills and experience.
